How to Accelerate Business Agility through Successful Enterprise Agile Development with Flow Frameworks

From Project to Product

Beginning with the Industrial Revolution, about every 50 years a new wave of technology, combined with an ecosystem of technological revolutions and financial reach, has transformed the global economy. We are in the midst of a transformation period in the software and digital age. This book explains the Flow Framework, Value Stream Metrics, and Value Stream Networks with a case study of BMW as one of the ways to survive this transformation period.

-The true goal of DX is to use IT to rethink existing businesses and rapidly create new ones. In this context, the turning point of the software age is an opportunity for startups and a survival crisis for existing companies. Flow Frameworks and Value Stream Metrics are the key to overcoming this transition, enabling the creation of flexible and rapid software production across siloed boundaries between management, business, and software development teams. (From the supervisor’s afterword)

A must read for all executives, leaders, and software practitioners!

About the Author

MIK KERSTEN

Dr. Mick Carsten began his career as a research scientist at Xerox PARC Laboratories, where he created the first Aspect-oriented development environment. He later earned a PhD in computer science from the University of British Columbia, where he pioneered the integration of development tools with Agile and DevOps. From this research, he founded Tasktop, Inc. and wrote over 1 million lines of open source code, which are still in use today and have brought seven successful open source and commercial products to market.
Mick’s experience working on some of the largest digital transformations in the world led him to recognize a critical disconnect between business leaders and technical experts. Since then, Mick has been working on creating new tools and new frameworks to connect software value stream networks and enable the transition from project to product.
Mick lives in Vancouver, Canada with his family and travels the world sharing his vision of transforming the way software is built.

SAFe and the Flow Framework in the translation and publication of this book

We at TDC SOFT Inc. conducted an industry-academia joint research on Enterprise Agile Development with the Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (IIST) starting in 2017, given the reality that Enterprise Agile development in Japan was never going well at that time. After the SAFe® Global Summit in 2018, which we attended to gather best practices, we have been promoting the introduction of Enterprise Agile to the Japanese market as a partner of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework®), a large-scale Agile development framework, since 2019 We are committed to the adoption of enterprise agile in the Japanese market. And the keynote speech at the SAFe Global Summit held in San Diego, USA in November 2019 was the meeting with Mik and the trigger for the translation of this book.

The true goal of DX is to leverage IT to rethink existing business and rapidly create new business. In this regard, SAFe is an enterprise agile framework that improves the business agility of companies and organizations. in implementing SAFe, it is important to define a set of activities and processes, or value streams, to deliver value to customers in line with the organization’s vision and strategy In other words, the value stream. A way to effectively manage these value streams is the flow framework concept presented in this document.
In March 2023, SAFe evolved to version 6.0, incorporating the essence of this flow framework. As part of our enterprise agile services, we provide various training and consulting services for SAFe 6.0. For more information about the availability of training and consulting for SAFe 6.0, please visit the Enterprise Agile Services SAFe Details page.
