TDC SOFT Inc. Accelerates R&D on ENEOS Low-Carbon Technology with Agile Development
~Full use of Agile to promote flexible and speedy development of various types of products
TDC Soft, Inc. (President: Hiroyoshi Kobayashi, hereinafter referred to as “TDC Soft”) has fully utilized our agile development method to flexibly and speedily proceed with various development projects for ENEOS Corporation (President: Takeshi Saito, hereinafter referred to as “ENEOS”) in their research and development for the realization of a decarbonized and recycling-oriented society, (President and Representative Director: Takeshi Saito, hereinafter referred to as “ENEOS”) to accelerate their R&D efforts to realize a decarbonized and recycling society.

Background and purpose of our Agile adoption
Climate change, one of the most important global issues, is forcing the energy industry to make a major shift from fossil fuels to the use of renewable energy. However, there are still many challenges to overcome in order to make stable use of renewable energy of natural origin, and companies are still struggling through a process of trial and error.
ENEOS, one of Japan’s leading energy companies, is no exception. The company’s Central Technical Research Institute is promoting a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) that functions like a single large power plant by integrating and controlling hydrogen energy and various energy equipment, as well as developing hydrogen carrier production technology and synthetic fuels. We are implementing various initiatives toward a carbon-free and recycling-oriented society. Our agile development was selected for these R&D projects because our proposal was specific and understood the flexibility of the requirements.
What made you choose Agile and us?
-
Research and development is always in flux, the future is not always clear, and the researcher himself sometimes wants to try out his ideas immediately, so he decided that agile was the best way to meet such demands.
-
The company’s proposal to use Scrum* in two-week sprints, which is specific and understands “requirements flexibility,” was rated as the best in terms of Agile knowledge.
-
Scrum is a common framework in agile practices. A sprint is a fixed period of time during which the team works in Scrum, and through repetition, the team creates value.
Challenges before Agile implementation
-
Acceleration of research and development is required to solve social issues
-
Control testing of energy equipment required visiting the site where the equipment was located.
-
There was no environment to bundle multiple devices and perform control tests.
Results after Agile implementation
-
Quick response to “ambiguous requirements” that are common in research
-
We were able to construct an environment in which control tests could be performed over the network.
-
Many devices can now be easily connected for comprehensive testing.
Agile-developed systems
-
Three months after the start of development, ” hammock® EMS” was released to monitor and manage the operating status of solar power generation, hydrogen power generation, storage batteries, etc.
-
Developed storage battery control simulator; beta version available in October 2022, with ongoing UI/UX improvements and enhancements
-
Developed a system visualization screen for the demonstration experiment of energy management services using electric vehicles being conducted by the city of Higashimurashin, Tokyo and ENEOS.
In both cases, development is progressing at a speed that only Agile can provide, and these results have been recognized and have gained understanding for the promotion of Agile within ENEOS.
Takuya Kajita, Deputy Director of the Advanced Technology Research Institute, ENEOS Central Research & Development Center, said
